Obama administration says it will cancel $39 billion in student loans.

ALBURQUE, New Mexico

Student loan holders may soon get new relief after losing hope following the Supreme Court’ s decision regarding the Biden administration ‘s plan for loan forgiveness.
A plan that would have given 43 million borrowers debt relief of up to $20,000 was rejected by the supreme court last month.
Over 800,000 borrowers will have their student debts automatically forgiven, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The overall amount of outstanding loans is expected to be $39 billion.
It represents the department’s initial effort to obtain federal student loan relief under their existing authority. 43 million Americans are going to start repaying their debts again at the time of this.
Except for a small number of borrowers who will have their loans automatically forgiven under Biden’s revised plan, most borrowers will resume paying their student loans on October 1.
You needed to have completed 20 or 25 years of “income-driven repayment plan” payments in order to be eligible.
As a result, depending on your income, if you participate in the program, your monthly payments would be cheaper. After a predetermined period of time, the remaining balance is likewise forgiven.
Your loan provider will send you an email if you are approved.
A gradual on-ramp for repayment is being developed by the Biden administration. There would be no penalties for borrowers who are unable to make payments for the first 12 months. The minimum payments will be halved under a program called “SAVE,” an income-driven payback scheme. It is reduced to 5% of discretionary income from 10%.
The agency would cancel loans of $12,000 or less after ten years of payments.
Additionally, President Biden gave the education department instructions to develop a new loan forgiveness program based on the “Higher Education Act.” He assured her that although it would take longer, the proposal would be “legally sound.”

The debt relief announced on Friday was met with the following statement from Stephanie M. Rodriguez, secretary of higher education for New Mexico:

“I applaud the Biden- Harris administration’s choice to cancel federal student loans for the more than 800,000 borrowers left behind by historical errors in how qualifying payments for income-driven repayment programs were tallied. With this choice, federal student loan programs will receive long overdue improvements that will reward industrious Americans for years of on-time loan payments . Thousands of New Mexicans who should have qualified for forgiveness but did not will also benefit from the reform, which offers much-needed assistance to low-income borrowers and their families. Through our highly regarded programs for colleges that don’t charge tuition and our substantial state-funded loan repayment programs, the state will keep working to eliminate student loan debt.
