Sexual abuser Larry Nassar stabbed in Florida federal prison altercation: Report

Disgraced former sports doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted of sexually abusing female gymnasts, was stabbed multiple times during an altercation with another inmate at a federal prison in Florida. The incident occurred at United States Penitentiary Coleman, and Nassar is reported to be in stable condition.

Nassar, known for his abuse of athletes while working at Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics, is serving a lengthy prison sentence for his crimes. In addition to the sexual assault charges, he also pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

The attack on Nassar took place amid staffing shortages at the prison. The facility has been dealing with a significant lack of correctional officers, which has been a recurring issue within the federal Bureau of Prisons. The shortage of staff has impacted the response to emergencies in various prisons, including instances of suicide.

Nassar’s assault comes in the wake of a high-profile case involving financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died by suicide in a federal jail in New York in 2019. The Epstein case shed light on the staffing issues and deficiencies within the Bureau of Prisons.

Larry Nassar’s victims, including prominent gymnast Simone Biles, have criticized the handling of the case by the FBI. More than 100 women collectively sought over $1 billion in compensation from the government for the FBI’s failure to act on the allegations against Nassar when they were initially reported in 2015. The Justice Department’s inspector general later confirmed that the FBI made significant errors in investigating the case and did not treat it with the seriousness it deserved.

In 2018, during Nassar’s sentencing hearing, numerous athletes testified that they had reported the abuse to adults, including coaches and trainers, but their complaints were ignored. The failure to respond effectively to these reports raised questions about the institutions and individuals responsible for overseeing Nassar’s activities.

The case against Nassar resulted in Michigan State University agreeing to pay $500 million in settlements to more than 300 women and girls who were victims of his abuse. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee also reached a $380 million settlement.

Despite ongoing appeals, the Michigan Supreme Court rejected Nassar’s final appeal in June 2022. Nassar’s attorneys had argued that he was treated unfairly during his sentencing hearing, but the court concluded that the appeal was without merit.

The attack on Larry Nassar highlights the ongoing repercussions of his heinous actions and the significant challenges faced by the prison system in ensuring the safety of inmates, particularly high-profile and controversial figures like Nassar.
